Nasal Congestion

Overview:

Nasal congestion, commonly known as a stuffy nose, occurs when the nasal passages become swollen due to inflammation of the blood vessels and tissues. This swelling, often accompanied by excessive mucus production, can obstruct airflow and make breathing difficult. Nasal congestion can be caused by colds, the flu, sinus infections, allergies, or environmental irritants like smoke or strong odors. Chronic nasal congestion may lead to headaches, poor sleep quality, and a reduced sense of smell.

Treatments

Medications

Over-the-counter decongestants, antihistamines, and saline nasal sprays can provide temporary relief.

Nasal Steroid Sprays

These reduce inflammation and swelling in the nasal passages.

Allergy Treatments

If allergies are the cause, antihistamines, nasal sprays, or immunotherapy (allergy shots) may be recommended.

Procedures

For chronic or structural issues, procedures like turbinate reduction or balloon sinuplasty may help improve airflow.
